Violinist Lana Trotovšek joins Tenebrae’s four Associate Artists in this special performance of Bach’s Partita No. 2 in D minor.  This work is unusual in its inclusion of a substantial Chaconne as its final movement - something which confounded musicologists for years. Professor Helga Thoene has suggested that the Partita was intended as a homage to Bach’s first wife, Maria Barbara, who had died unexpectedly while Bach was away in Karlsbad, and that the Chaconne is based on a number of funeral melodies from the Lutheran church. Here, the movements of the Partita are interspersed with chorales before Tenebrae’s Associate Artists join Lana in the Chaconne to bring out the hidden melodies.

This performance is supported by the Enterprise Arts Trust.
